Karen

she was lying at the foot of the bed
with her long hair falling down
I guess she lay about an hour or so
before they hauled her back to town
Christmas Eve in a winter storm
beneath the cold Oklahoma pines
Karen whispered her last hello
then with a crash
she said goodnight

it’s hard you know
in these hard times
‘cause we’ll never really know
what was on Karen’s mind

maybe she’s high up over the tree lines
flying like she never could
I guess she left her worries and her troubles behind
they never did a lick of good
no they never did a lick of good

it’s hard you know
in these hard times
‘cause we’ll never really know
what was on Karen’s mind

she started out with three little ones
but lost one not long ago
that never quite settles in
or so I’ve been told
but you never know
maybe she’s got him up in her arms tonight
and they’re dancing nice and slow
and maybe Karen wipes the tears from her eyes
and says, ‘Momma missed you so.’

but it’s hard you know
in these hard times
‘cause we’ll never know what was on Karen’s mind
what was on sweet Karen’s mind

Christmas Eve in a winter storm
beneath the cold Oklahoma pines
Karen whispered her last hello
then with a crash she said goodnight
