I was under strict orders from all of the teenagers I work with (www.highrocks.org) that I wasn't going to be allowed back in the state of West Virginia if I didn't include this song on the record.

I always play it at the camps with the girls. I will never forget this one night...we were all out in this big meadow in the woods and the stars were so close and so clear. I was singing a little "concert" in the dark for the girls before they went to bed. One of the girls, Breeanna (my homie), would hold a flashlight up to the neck of the guitar so I could see what was going on. Anyway, she was holding the light and looking so earnest and the girls were just so brave and powerful and new and I don't know what happened, but I just started crying and crying singing this song to them. We all just ended up watering the meadow with our exhaustion-induced tears that night.

"All of It" started out about me and the things I was trying to figure out about this big ole life, but ended up teaching me a lot about the importance of giving to others. If I spend this whole life giving to myself, who's going to have anything to show for it when I'm gone?

Well, it just had to go on after that. You don't know these girls...they are hardcore. If they want the song...they get the song.
All of It

we were five
sundress dancing
and smelling like July
we were flying
and sailing on ships made of dumpsters
and swimming through dirt and time
‘cause it’s the little things you do
that make it work

we are not our pieces
and we are not just the good bits
I am finally learning
we are all of it
all of it

sixteen were we
sneaking drinks and cigarettes
precious broken things
we were high
we gave too much away
we were fire
we were hurricanes

it’s the little things you do that make it work

‘cause we are not our pieces
and we are not just the good bits
I am finally learning
we are all of it
all of it

we were grown
and amazed at how we felt
the same as before
had we known
Instead of dimming all the lights
we would have shone

but we are not our pieces
and we are not just the good bits
I am finally learning
we are all of it
all
yeah we are not our pieces
and we are not just the good bits
and I am finally learning
we are all of it
all of it
